CLUB VISIT RAF HENDON

& THE LONDON EYE

Sept 2001

A low approach or a view from the London Eye?

September 26th was a memorable day, for it saw a group of seventeen departing York by rail for a day trip to the RAF Museum at Hendon - actually Collindale if you're travelling by tube; get off at Hendon Central and you'll find a need to get back on, or call a taxi! As the museum closes at 18:00, and our return train was at 21:00, we decided to view the city from the dizzy heights of the London Eye. In contrast to previous visits by myself, when I couldn't get near a ticket - was told they were booked up for the next three months - those without tickets just walked in and purchased one. The place was virtually deserted, with empty cars circling in the night sky. As for our group, everyone seemed to enjoy the experience, once initial apprehension was overcome by some, myself included; didn't really feel comfortable on a recent hot air balloon ride either.

The Duty Crew

The London Eye: Highly recommended, one might say. That left us with another tube ride back to Kings X, the short wait for the York train causing the station foyer to be graced by the unlikely sight of a bunch of pensioners sitting around tucking in to Burger King take-aways. Truly a spectacle to behold. Anyway, after a day in London, including a somewhat fraught session on the tube at rush hour, we returned to York at 2320, minus no one! Joe Munday and Arthur Roantree may have been flagging during the final stages, but they gamely won through.

My thanks to everyone for making it so easy.

Oh, almost forgot: Arthur, the train doors are automatic these days, no need to get violent. (We suppose that's what you expect from a former AIR GUNNER - shoot and then ask questions!!!)

Harrogate return visit to York

August

Following the visit of the club to the Harrogate Branch in April (Click on Harrogate Visit for details) Harrogate members returned the compliment in August but thanks to the Ladies of York they were soon "fed up"!
